Move More, Milton! aims for 65,000 minutes of activity this March
Thursday, March 1 marks the first day of Milton’s second annual Move More, Milton! month.

For the month of March, community groups, organizations, schools, businesses, families and individuals are encouraged to promote their commitment to physical activity by organizing and participating in a variety of active living initiatives. The goal for the campaign is to achieve a total of 65,000 minutes of community-wide activity in an effort to encourage healthy living and active lifestyles among Milton residents and employees.

“I would like to invite the Milton community to take that extra step to work towards achieving this active living goal for March,” said Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. “Move More, Milton! month is about creating a healthier and happier community by encouraging people to take the time to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines.”

The kick-off will occur on Thursday, March 1 at 10:00 a.m at the Milton Sports Centre walking/jogging track. The community is invited to attend and work toward the kick-off goal of 8,000 laps around the track, with free admission for the day.

To get involved in the Move More, Milton! month campaign, participants can visit the website at www.MoveMoreMilton.ca, register their commitment to participate and report progress. The website will feature updates as participants have the opportunity to highlight their experiences and much more. The website will also include logos and links to the websites of participating groups, organizations and schools, as well as downloadable resources to promote planned events and discover active living opportunities within the community.

Several Milton organizations have already pledged a commitment to the initiative. Milton Canadian Champion carriers will wear pedometers to track steps taken to deliver newspapers and Milton Public Library staff will encourage patrons to get active with a list of available healthy lifestyle/active living resources on the Move More, Milton! website.

To show commitment to the campaign, the Move More, Milton! team is urging participants to wear orange at active events. Participants are encouraged to be creative by using orange t-shirts, hats, sunglasses, scarves, mittens or necklaces as decorative attire.

The Milton Sports Centre is offering “Move It Mondays” and the Milton Leisure Centre is offering “Free Fitness Fridays” throughout March to encourage participation in fitness and aquafit classes as well as visits to the weight/cardio room. In addition, with a Bring-your-own Buddy promotion in March, Leisure Centre pass holders may bring a guest for free to participate in a group fitness class or visit the weight/cardio room.  Specific schedules are available at www.milton.ca.
