The Town of Milton - in partnership with local emergency service providers - is implementing a series of street name and addressing changes to eliminate inconsistencies in the Town's addressing system.
The program aims to ensure greater safety for every Milton resident by eliminating confusing street name or addressing information used by emergency service providers.
Changes to a total of 19 streets and 532 properties were approved by Council in April 2008. The proposed street name changes are confirmed when by-laws are passed to enact the street name change.
The Street Renaming and Addressing Program is being implemented in a phased approach as follows:
| Phase | Changes | Schedule | Status |
| 1 | House number changes and first group of street name changes | February - May 2009 | Completed |
| 2 | Second group of street name changes | May - August 2009 | Completed |
| 3 | Third group of street name changes | September - December 2009 | Completed |
| 4 | Street names and house number changes triggered by development | As needed when growth occurs | Underway |
Property owners will receive official notification from the Town informing them when exactly they can change their address.
Milton Council has also approved the replacement of street name sign blades and improved street lighting at a number of locations throughout town. This will help ensure that when an emergency call is made, the caller will be more likely to provide accurate addressing information to the emergency responder.
Milton Council has approved the following compensation program for property owners affected by the program:
Rural municipal sign blades will also be changed by the Fire Department at no cost to the homeowner.
In fall 2006, the Town of Milton Planning and Development Department and Milton Fire Department, in conjunction with the Halton Regional Police Service, Halton Region Emergency Medical Service and Bell 911, completed a detailed study of all property addressing within the Town and identified a number of areas with conflicting or confusing addressing inconsistencies.
It was determined that there are some areas within the Town of Milton where determining the exact location of an emergency could be somewhat difficult and potentially delayed due to conflicting or confusing street name and/or addressing information.
The primary purpose of any street name and addressing system is to ensure that every property location within the municipality can be quickly and easily located using a unique and non-confusing location identification - your municipal address.
