Please note that tax rates are approved by Council about the end of May each year and  the current year's tax rates are posted at that time. Before this time, for estimate purposes only, you may use the previous year's tax rates.

Sale of Property for Non-Payment of Taxes

If property taxes remain unpaid for a specific period of time the Town is authorized, under the Municipal Act, to sell vacant or improved land in any property class.

Once a certificate has been registered, partial payments cannot be accepted. A Tax Arrears Certificate indicates that the property will be sold if all taxes, penalties, interest and costs incurred by the Town are not paid within one year of registration of the certificate. This amount is referred to as the cancellation price.

New Owner/Moving Information

Whether you are new to the Town or a long-time resident, we trust that you will truly find Milton to be the best place to live, work and play!

As a new home/business owner in the Town of Milton, there are a number of questions that you may have regarding property taxes, especially if this is your first property purchase.

The following is designed to provide you with some general information about property taxes that many new homeowners ask.

Your annual property taxes are paid in 4 installments throughout the year. They are due the last business day of the following months: February, April, June and September.

Each year, the Interim Tax Bill (February and April installments) will be mailed out in early February and the Final Tax Bill (June and September installments) will be mailed out in early June.

Please visit "Pay your Taxes" for more information and methods for payment.

Did you Previously Live in Milton?

If you previously owned in Milton and pay your property taxes through online banking or telephone banking, please ensure your roll number is updated (15 digit number found on the top right of your notice).  Note that the roll number for your new property is different than your previous property in Milton.

Failure to update your roll number will result in payment(s) being applied to your previous property and fees may be incurred to correct the error.

My Mortgage Company is Paying my Property Taxes.  What Should I do?

If you have made arrangements to pay your property taxes through your mortgage company, please contact them when you receive your first bill. Please ensure that your mortgage company notifies the Town of Milton Tax Division to advise that they will be paying your property taxes. After they have done so, your tax bill will be mailed to your mortgage company. The only time you will receive communication from us is if your account goes into arrears or if a supplementary bill is issued. If you receive either of these documents, please contact your mortgage company to arrange for payment.

I Received a Supplementary/Omitted Tax Bill.  Do I Have to Pay it?

As taxes are levied against the property and not the person, it is legally the responsibility of the current owner to ensure full payment has been made. It is suggested that the owner contact their lawyer to advise them that these retroactive tax bills have been received. Your lawyer will then contact the vendor's solicitors to readjust taxes if required.

How do I Cancel/Transfer my Payment Plan?

If you sold a property and purchased a new property, be sure to cancel your payment arrangement on the old property. Please complete the Account Change or Cancellation form and return by mail, fax or email to the Tax Division.

As per the terms and conditions of the program, written notice is required a minimum of 15 days prior to the sale date to cancel any future withdrawals. Failure to notify the Town of an upcoming sale and the effective cancellation dates could result in further payment withdrawals and fees to correct the error.

If you move within Milton, the PTP program is not transferable. The program must be cancelled on the previous property and a new application must be completed for the new property according to the enrollment deadlines indicated within the terms and conditions of this program. Fees may apply if a refund due to taxes paid in error occurs.

For more information on this program, please visit "Pay your Taxes". Alternatively, contact the Tax Division at 905-864-4142 for more information.

I Have Sold my House and the Closing is Scheduled in the Middle of the Tax Billing Period.  How will the New Owner and I Split the Tax Bill?

Your lawyer will complete all the adjustments for you on closing through the "statement of adjustments". This document indicates which portion of the tax billing period is the current owner's responsibility and what the new owner will be required to pay. As taxes are levied against the property and not the person, owners are required to make all tax payments as they are due, up to the date of closing to avoid any late payment fees. The Town of Milton does not calculate, nor provide individual billings, between vendors and purchasers.
