Community invited to attend official opening of Milton Sports Centre expansion

Posted on Tuesday January 31, 2012

The Town of Milton is celebrating the completion of the expansion and renovations to the Milton Sports Centre with an official opening on Saturday, February 11, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Official opening ceremonies will kick off the event at 11:30 a.m. in the Milton Sports Centre Banquet Hall.

The event will feature live entertainment and free activities for the community including swimming; skating; ice painting; family fitness and sports; children’s activities and games; as well as an opportunity to meet former NHL referee Bruce Hood and long-distance runner Ed Whitlock, both members of the Milton Walk of Fame.

The Milton Sports Centre expansion consisted of three phases that added 136,000 square feet to the facility. Phases 1 and 2 were possible thanks to funding assistance from federal and provincial grants of approximately $13.4 million from the Building Canada Infrastructure Stimulus Fund.  These two phases of the expansion included an indoor walking/jogging track, two ice pads, a studio with mirrors and sprung floor, a double gymnasium, additional meeting rooms, renovated concessions and a program room for children’s activities.

Phase 3 completed the project, adding a leisure pool equipped to serve all ages and abilities and a 25 metre pool, featuring eight lanes, two diving boards and easy ramp access.

The project also provided an opportunity to upgrade the energy efficiency in the building, which was designed to achieve LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification and utilizes many of the latest energy efficiency technologies, including a geo-thermal heat recovery system that lowers carbon emissions and heating costs.

A detailed schedule of events, along with further information on the expansion and programs offered at the Milton Sports Centre, is available on the Town’s website, www.milton.ca, or by calling 905-878-7252, ext. 2601.
