Town of Milton officially opens Main Street Grade Separation

The Town of Milton is pleased to announce the official opening and completion of the Main Street Grade Separation, a project funded in part through the federal Gas Tax Fund.

"Canadian communities need modern and efficient public infrastructure and I am pleased to see this important project completed for the benefit of all Milton residents," said the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities. "Infrastructure is about communities and about people. I look forward to working in partnership with towns, cities, provinces and territories across Canada to help build strong, vibrant and liveable communities for all Canadians."
 
"On behalf of Milton Council, we are pleased to officially open the Main Street Grade Separation," said Town of Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. "This project brings important benefits to the community, including improved traffic flow through the urban centre of Milton, better access to the downtown business area, more reliable access to the Milton GO Station, and increased public safety through the construction of a new rail bridge for train traffic and an underpass for vehicular and pedestrian traffic."

In 2007, Milton Council identified the need to eliminate the level crossing of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) tracks at Main Street East, just east of Ontario Street. In addition to traffic and safety benefits, the project will result in environmental benefits through the separation of road vehicles from train traffic and the elimination of idling vehicles waiting for trains to clear the crossing.

"I would like to thank residents, local business owners and visitors to Milton for their patience and cooperation during this multi-year project – which, by the way, has been completed on schedule and on budget," added Mayor Krantz. "This project is another example of success through partnerships between the various levels of government, Town staff, organizations like CPR, contractors and of course members of our community."

The Town of Milton dedicated more than $2.8 million of its federal Gas Tax Fund allocation toward this approximately $49 million project.

Detailed design for the project got underway in 2008, with construction beginning in fall 2011 and completion of lighting, landscaping and signage in fall 2015. The multi-year schedule reflected the structural challenges due to the sharp angle at which the CPR tracks crossed Main Street. As a result, project features include:

  • A long bridge span over the underpass
  • An S-curve road alignment
  • Sidewalks level with the underpass roadway (therefore not elevated)
  • Reconstruction of Main Street East  for existing businesses, slightly to the north of the former roadway
  • Traffic signals, storm sewers, and retaining wall construction
