Milton Sports Centre Expansion Project

The Milton Sports Centre, located at 605 Santa Maria Blvd., opened in 2003 and originally featured two ice pads, gymnastics complex, outdoor beach volleyball courts, banquet hall, multi-purpose room, meeting rooms, concession operation, pro shop, and administrative space.

The facility was designed from the outset to allow for future expansion. This expansion was made possible thanks to federal and provincial grants of approximately $13.4 million from the Building Canada Fund - Infrastructure Stimulus Fund. The facility is positioned at the north end of the Milton Community Park, a 100-acre parcel to be developed in stages over the next three to five years. Additional trails and transit connections are also planned for this area in the next several years.

Feasibility Study

A feasibility study and public consultation were completed in 2009 by Monteith Brown Planning Consultants. These considered building components, concept plans, capital and operating cost estimates, business plan, facility footprint, parking requirements and links to outdoor parks and trails, including a connection to the adjacent Community Park.

The business plan and needs assessment study were presented to Milton Council on October 13, 2009.

Construction Phases

Construction of Phase 1 of the Milton Sports Centre Expansion Design Build Contract was awarded to Ball Construction at a Special Council meeting Monday, January 18, 2010.

The 136,000 square-foot total expansion was divided into two phases. The first phase included construction of two new ice pads and seating (one of which has a seating capacity of 500 people), a double gymnasium, an elevated indoor walking /jogging track and multi-purpose spaces. Over 9,000 hours of ice are scheduled annually, with this number to double as two more ice surfaces are added. The award was for a proposed value of $27,926,500. The funding program required that the project be completed by March 31, 2011.

Phase 2 of the expansion was also awarded to Ball Construction, and included  construction of a leisure pool and eight-lane competition pool. The second phase didn't qualify for funding and therefore was not required to meet the March 2011 deadline, but was phased in as part of building the expansion; the pools opened in November 2011 . The expanded facility includes leading-edge technology to maximize energy efficiency through a geothermal heat recovery system.
