New Technology for Safety

In August of 2000, the Milton Fire Department completed the first phase of a major capital project, which was the installation of a "3MOPTICOM" automatic traffic light signal changer. This system automatically changes the red light to a green light via a roof-mounted strobe light when fire trucks are responding to an emergency call. This system is designed to allow a quicker and safer response for urban emergency calls and to reduce the situations where a fire truck has to proceed through a red light.

What the public should know

  • As a resident, you should constantly monitor the traffic signal if you hear approaching sirens as the green light that you currently have may change quite quickly to a red light to allow the fire truck to proceed safely through the intersection.
  • Crossing guards at these intersections should be especially aware as it may limit the time that a light change cycle normally takes for their intersection.
