Become a Part-Time Firefighter
Being a part-time firefighter is both challenging and rewarding. The part-time firefighter is an integral part of the Milton Fire Department.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications for part-time firefighter are:
- Canadian citizen or legal entitlement to work in Canada as a firefighter
- Resident of Milton/Campbellville
- High school graduation diploma (OSSD) or academic equivalent
- Ability to understand and communicate clearly in English under stressful conditions
- Valid Ontario class G driver's license. Applicants must have a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behavior and those with six or more points are ineligible for consideration.
- No conviction for a criminal offence
Recommended qualifications for part-time firefighter are:
- Valid CPR and First Aid certificates
- Valid Ontario class D driver's license with Z air brake endorsement.
- Pre-service firefighter education and/or additional training program certificates
- Be capable of handling intense and sustained physical activity
Recruit Process
The recruit process consists of the following steps:

Information session |
The purpose of the information session is to provide an overview of the Fire Service; explain the application process; outline recruit training; job performance expectations and provide the applicant with an opportunity to ask questions. |

A minimum of 70% on the exam is required. |

Physical demands assessment |
Conducted in-house, this assessment consists of various job related tasks, which must all be successfully completed. |

Interview |
Fact-to-face interview with members of Human Resources and the Fire Department |

Medical examination by Milton Fire Department physician, |
Recruit Training Program
The Recruit Training Program, which takes approximately one year to complete, begins with orientation subjects such as health and safety, incident command and professionalism. Classroom and hands-on training sessions for recruits will be held on Monday and Thursday at our Central Station location from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. Periodic off-site training will also take place throughout the course of the year.
