Heritage Milton believes in working with owners to help preserve our community’s past. Designation serves several purposes:

Designation:
Designation does recognize and enforce the cultural value of and community appreciation for heritage properties and provides protection against inappropriate treatment.
To have a property officially designated by the Province of Ontario, the owner can contact Heritage Milton. This committee and the Town’s Planning and Development Department then initiate a study to determine if designation would be appropriate. The study is then submitted to Town Council, along with an application. If approved by Town Council, a Notice of Intention to Designate is sent to the owner and published in the local paper; a review process is in place to hear any objections. Upon final approval, Town Council enacts the By-law on Title. Notice is then sent to both the owner and the Ontario Heritage Foundation, notifying them that the property is formally designated. Heritage Milton then presents an official bronze plaque to the owner for display on the designated property.
