Snow control - Town of Milton
Snow Control
Be Ready for Winter Weather - Allow the Plow!
The Town provides winter maintenance to more than 1,400 lane km of Regional
and Town roads (taking both sides of roadways into account) and more than 119
km of designated walkways and sidewalks.
We all want our street cleared of snow quickly, but nothing slows down the work of snow plows more than cars parked on the street. Please remember:
- The parking by-law in the Town of Milton is three hours unless otherwise posted.
- Cars must be removed from the road during snow clearing operations (in which case the three hour parking limit does not apply).
- Vehicles found to be impeding snow clearing operations can be ticketed and towed at the owner’s expense.
- Keeping parked cars off the street will speed up snow removal and increase community safety.
If a street has not been cleared within 24 hours after a storm has ended, please call the Snow Control office at 905-878-7252 ext. 2500.

Snow Removal from Roads
Roads are maintained in a priority sequence, beginning with Regional Roads, followed by arterial and collector roads.
Snow-clearing operations begin on these roads once 2 cm of snow has accumulated. Regional, arterial and collector roads are cleared to bare pavement within 2 to 12 hours following the end of the winter storm event, depending on snow accumulations.
Snow Removal from Sidewalks
With accumulation of 5 cm or more of snow, designated sidewalks and pathways associated with schools, transit routes and major pedestrian travel are plowed. These sidewalk snow removal routes have three classifications and are maintained based on a priority sequence.
How Residents Can Help
In order to speed up snow removal, the Town asks all residents to abide by existing by-laws, by:
- Moving all vehicles from the roadways during winter maintenance;
- Abiding by the maximum 3-hour parking by-law at all times (Parking By-Law #1984-1); and
- Refraining from placing snow on the roadway when shoveling driveways and sidewalks (Obstruct Highways By-Law 115-2005).
To facilitate snow removal from sidewalks, please note the following:
- Parking of vehicles on sidewalks is prohibited (Parking By-law 1984-1). Owners who do not abide will be ticketed.
- All decorative items that abut sidewalks and curbs should be flush with the ground and 300 mm (12") from the edge of the curb or sidewalk. This will help reduce the chance of damage to property, snow removal equipment and injury to operators. The Town is not responsible for damage to decorative items in the road allowance.
- Any damage to Town-owned trees, sod and pavement will be repaired at the Town's earliest convenience in the spring.
