Ward Boundary Review

Ahead of the 2010 municipal elections, Milton Council commissioned an independent consultant to review ward boundaries.

Milton Council approved new ward boundaries on March 30, 2009. These wards will take effect the day the new Council of the Town of Milton is organized after the November 2010 elections. The 2010 elections will be held as if the new ward boundaries are already in place.

Current System

The Town of Milton is presently governed by an 11-member Council, consisting of the Mayor and 10 Councillors:
- 8 Local Councillors and
- 2 Local & Regional Councillors
The Town is divided into 4 wards, each of which elects 2 "Local Councillors" (to a total of 8) who sit on Town Council only.
Two "Local and Regional Councillors" - who sit on both Town Council and Halton Region Council - are elected to represent two wards that are grouped together for this purpose (wards 1 and 3 for "rural Milton", and wards 2 and 4 for "urban Milton").
The Mayor is the head of Milton Council and also sits on Halton Region Council.
Council determined the boundaries for the four wards in 1997 when Milton had a population of approximately 32,000. Today, Milton's population is more than 70,000 and is expected to grow at a steady pace over the next decade or more.

What Will Change

The Town will be divided into 8 wards, each of which will elect one local Councillor.
Two Local and Regional Councillors will be elected to represent four wards that are grouped together for this purpose:

Wards 1, 6, 7, and 8 will elect one Local and Regional Councillor.
Wards 2, 3, 4, and 5 will elect the other Local and Regional Councillor.
