Milton Fire Department Safety Tips for Earth Hour

Planning to turn off the lights for Earth Hour and light some candles? The Milton Fire Department has some recommendations to keep you safe during your "lights out" activities.

Handle Your Candles with Care

  • Consider using battery-operated flameless candles.
  • When using candles, place them in sturdy, safe candleholders that will not burn or tip over.
  • Protect candle flames with glass chimneys.
  • Keep candles at least 12 inches (30 cm) from anything that can burn.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended; burning candles can start a fire.
  • Do not carry around lit candles; always use a flashlight for emergency lighting.

Lock Away Lighters and Matches

  • Keep matches and lighters up high and out of the reach of children, in a locked cabinet.
  • Use only child-resistant lighters

Don’t Forget to Sound the Alarms!

Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are in working order.
