Sherwood Community Centre and Library plans advance

Posted on Tuesday January 12, 2016

News release -

At its meeting on January 11, 2016, the Town of Milton’s Committee of the Whole approved a staff report (COMS-001-16) and Component Study confirming the facility components, space allocations, and capital cost estimates for the next planned community centre in Milton, the Sherwood Community Centre and Library.

The facility will be located on the north side of Main Street West, just east of Tremaine Road and adjacent to the recently developed Sherwood District Park. The study recommends the following facility components: a branch library; a twin pad arena; an aquatic centre (a 25-metre, six-lane pool and a leisure/therapeutic pool); an active living studio, an older adult activity area (lounge, activity room and/or small kitchen along with access to shared spaces with the centre); and multi-purpose space. Other components may be considered during future phases of the planning process. Outdoor recreation facilities on site may also be considered but are not included in the current cost estimates.

“On behalf of Milton Council, we are looking forward to collaborating with the Milton Public Library in this joint community centre,” said Town of Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. “As planning for the facility progresses, our main goal will be to meet the recreation, leisure and cultural needs of our growing and changing community.”

“It is an exciting time at MPL”, said Library Board Chair, Brad Boehmer.  “Working with the Town to develop a new Branch Library as a component in this multi-use facility is something we have been anticipating for years”.

The estimated capital budget for the Sherwood Community Centre and Library is $50 million, with the opening anticipated for late summer or fall 2018.

The next phase of the planning process will be to undertake the business plan to assess service delivery options and to fully assess the operating costs and revenues that will impact future budgets. The subsequent phase would require the retention of project management and architectural services to begin design of the facility, pending Council approval. Opportunities for public input will be announced in future project phases.
