News Release
Today, the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, MP Adam van Koeverden, MPP Parm Gill, and His Worship Gordon Krantz, Mayor of the Town of Milton, announced joint-funding for an infrastructure project that will improve the safety and efficiency of Milton’s public transit system and operations. The Government of Canada is investing more than $3.9 million in this project through the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream (PTIS) of the Investing in Canada plan. The Government of Ontario is providing more than $3.2 million.
This funding announcement is the first step toward the construction of a new local transit operations facility that will significantly improve the storage and servicing needs of Milton’s public transit fleet.
“I’m pleased to see all three levels of government come together to make this project a reality,” said Mayor Gord Krantz. “Efficient and sustainable public transit plays a key role in keeping our community moving. On behalf of the Town of Milton, I want to thank our federal and provincial partners for investing in our community, ensuring Milton has the infrastructure required to meet the transit needs of our growing community.”
The development of the new transit operations facility is a multi-year project that includes site acquisition, facility design and construction. Sustainable design practices, such as the LEED criteria, will be implemented to build the facility that will have a capacity of 70 conventional and specialized vehicles as well as provide extra space for servicing and maintenance.
“The construction of the new transit operations facility will increase passenger safety, encourage greener forms of transportation and provide residents with a better and more reliable transit system,” said Tony D’Alessandro, Manager, Milton Transit. “We look forward to building on our commitment to create a complete community in Milton.”
