Today, I learned of the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Hazel McCallion. My sincere condolences to her children Peter, Linda, Paul, and her entire family.

I had the privilege of serving with Hazel for her 36 years as mayor of Mississauga. As mayors of neighbouring municipalities, we often had shared mutual interests on key issues affecting our Milton and Mississauga communities over those years. Under Hazel’s leadership, the formation of the now known Ontario Big City Mayors was created for a united voice of our GTA communities, and eventually all big cities across Ontario, that would collectively advance mutual priorities such as economic development, social and health services, and education. She and I attended many economic trade missions together where she made her mark globally. She was a fierce colleague, with an incredible presence about her in the political realm that ultimately drove Mississauga’s evolution as a vibrant city.

We weren’t just political colleagues, we were friends. I was humbled to have been able to recently spend time with her, and her spirit was as strong as ever. I often referred to her as the rock star of politics - she inspired people, everyone wanted to speak with her, take a picture with her, and be in her presence. I was no different, and I was grateful for being included in her group of friends that were able to spend time with her in these past few weeks.

She was devoted to her family, public service, and community. Her legacy will live on. Rest in peace, Hazel.

You will be missed. Your friend and colleague, Gord.
