In recognition of the disruption caused by the COVID-19 outbreak, the Town of Milton is offering temporary relief for taxpayers by relaxing all penalties and fees for residents needing to defer paying property taxes.

The grace period will begin April 1, ending June 30, 2020. Residents and businesses are still encouraged to pay the 2020 Interim taxes by the regularly scheduled April 30 2020 tax due date, however, alternative relief has been approved by Town Council to assist those who require deferral:

  • Neither interest nor late fees will be charged for unpaid taxes on April 1 2020, May 1 2020 or June 1 2020.
  • Taxpayers who sent post-dated cheques to the Town for their April 30, 2020 tax instalment and would like to cancel the payment are being asked to place a stop payment on the item. There will be no returned item fees charged by the Town of Milton. All remaining post-dated cheques will be deposited on April 30, 2020 as scheduled.
  • Pre-authorized payment withdrawals for the Monthly plan that are scheduled for April 30 and May 31, will be withdrawn from the bank as scheduled. For taxpayers enrolled in this program who wish to cancel from the program or delay either payment to June are asked to email taxes@milton.ca or contact staff at 905-864-4142 no later than April 15,2020 to make arrangements.
  • Pre-authorized payment withdrawals for the Installment plan that are scheduled for April 30 will be withdrawn from the bank as scheduled.  For tax payers enrolled in this program and wish to cancel from the program or delay this payment to either May or June are asked to email taxes@milton.ca or contact staff at 905-864-4142 no later than April 15to make arrangements.
  • If a cheque or a Pre-authorized payment is returned by the bank between now and June 30, 2020, due to insufficient funds or stop payment, the Town of Milton will not charge an administration fee or penalty.

“The Town of Milton is committed to supporting the health and well-being of our community,” said Mayor Gord Krantz. “We understand that many residents and businesses are struggling with concerns relating to health, finances, and supplies and we will continue offering support wherever possible.”

Milton Council and the Town’s Crisis Management team continue to monitor the situation, in consultation with Halton Region Public Health, and assess the need for  service changes and operational adjustments.
