Current status

This project is in the Pre-Planning Phase, when the Town identifies and engages Indigenous communities, individuals, and regulatory agencies that may be affected.

Environmental and engineering studies are underway, along with the development of a preliminary building layout and program. Once a development concept is confirmed, an impact assessment will be completed to identify potential environmental impacts and appropriate mitigation measures.

After the pre-planning phase, the Town will issue a Notice of Study Commencement, which will start the formal TRPAP process.

The Town of Milton is planning a new Transit Maintenance and Storage Facility (TMSF) to increase transit capacity, improve local service, and support long-term ridership growth. The facility will include a bus maintenance building, bus parking areas, and space for future electric bus charging stations. A new bridge over a tributary of Sixteen Mile Creek is proposed to provide access to the site. The new transit garage will expand the Town’s ability to service and operate more buses, improving reliability, and supporting future transit growth.

About the project 

The Town of Milton is undertaking a Transit and Rail Project Assessment Process (TRPAP) for the proposed Transit Maintenance and Storage Facility (TMSF). The facility will support improved service reliability and operational efficiency by expanding Milton’s ability to maintain, store, and electrify its transit fleet.

The proposed site is located at the rear of 5670 Regional Road 25 (Bronte Road), south of Britannia Road. This property currently includes the existing Town of Milton Civic Operations Centre (MCOC) along the frontage.

Project background 

Milton Transit’s Five-Year Service Plan and Master Plan Update identified the need for an expanded bus garage. Without additional space, the Town will be limited in its ability to increase service levels, support fleet growth, or transition to electric buses. A review of potential sites was completed, and the proposed study area was identified as the preferred location for the new facility.

What is a Transit and Rail Project Assessment? 

This project is following the Transit and Rail Project Assessment Process (TRPAP) to meet the requirements in the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act, O. Reg. 231/08.

The TRPAP is a streamlined environmental assessment process for transit projects. It provides a defined 120-day framework to assess potential environmental effects and make project decisions. The project is in the pre-planning phase, and the Town is hosting the first online public engagement event.
