Buying a property in Milton

Change the ownership

For some services you can notify directly that you are purchasing the property. However, for property taxes residents can’t self-report the ownership change.

Our records will be updated when MPAC notifies our office of the change (approximately 2-3 weeks after the closing date).

Welcome letter

Once notified, we will change the ownership and mail out a welcome letter via Canada Post with your account balance and any upcoming installments due.

What to pay

Your lawyer will adjust for property taxes on closing. This calculation is on your “Statement of Adjustments” from your lawyer. When you receive your welcome letter from the Town of Milton, it will include your property tax balance information. Questions regarding this adjustment should be directed to your lawyer.

Consult with your lawyer

To avoid any late payments and interest/penalty, confirm with your lawyer if you should make any payments prior to month-end. If your lawyer ordered a tax certificate, they will have a summary of the account balance. Once the ownership change has been processed by our office, we can provide that information to you directly.

Request a change to your contact information to change your mailing address and/or provide up-to-date contact information.
