Qualifications
To become a part-time firefighter, you must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or have legal entitlement to work in Canada
- Be a resident of Milton to apply
- Have a high school graduation diploma (OSSD) or academic equivalent
- Be able to understand and communicate in English under stress
- Have an Ontario class G driver’s licence and a good driving record (provide a recent drivers abstract within 30 days)
- Submit a Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening
We also recommend that you:
- Have a CPR and First Aid certificate
- Have an Ontario class D driver’s licence with Z air brake endorsement
- Are capable of handling intense and sustained physical activity

When: Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026 at 6:30 p.m.

What to expect: Physical assessment and acrophobia (fear of heights) test
When: Week of Nov. 16, 2026
When: Week of Feb. 1, 2027
Once you’ve completed all steps, you will be offered a position on a probationary basis. You must then complete the one-year training program.
Duties
Every day, firefighters are called to serve the public and protect citizens in a time of crisis. This process involves:
- Preventing, combating and extinguishing fires
- Answering emergency calls
- Operating and maintaining fire equipment, apparatus and quarters
These duties require extensive training in firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials and emergency medical care. You will need to operate apparatus and perform dangerous assignments in emergency conditions.
