Overview
The services on this page help prepare properties for emergencies by supporting fire safety, clear property identification, and safe building access. Together, they help Milton Fire & Rescue Services respond more quickly and safely when an emergency occurs.
These services focus on reducing risk before an emergency occurs and ensuring responders can identify, access, and assess properties efficiently. While each service addresses a different need, they work together to improve emergency response outcomes for residents and businesses.
Fire prevention inspections help ensure buildings meet the requirements of the Ontario Fire Code and support safer environments for occupants, property owners, and emergency responders.
This service is commonly used by:
-
Business owners
-
Property managers
-
Owners of multi-unit or commercial properties
During a fire prevention inspection, staff may:
-
Identify fire code violations
-
Review fire safety systems and maintenance requirements
-
Issue inspection reports, orders, or written recommendations
-
Work with owners to address compliance issues, if required
You will be notified in advance of an inspection. Follow-up may occur if enforcement or corrective action is needed.
Use the Request Fire Prevention Services form to:
-
Request a fire inspection
-
Request a fire report
Select the option that best describes your request when completing the form.
Clear and accurate house numbering helps emergency responders locate properties quickly during emergencies.
Municipal addresses are assigned when:
-
A new construction application is submitted
-
A new lot is created
For corner lots, the address is determined by the street with driveway access. Canada Post assigns postal codes separately.
-
Urban properties: Builders typically assign and install house numbers for new homes.
-
Rural properties: Owners are responsible for purchasing, installing, and maintaining a green municipal address sign at the entrance of the property.
Green address signs are mandatory in rural areas and must be clearly visible from the road so emergency vehicles can identify the address without delay. For more information about rural address sign requirements, review the Rural Address Sign Information Flyer.
Lock boxes provide secure emergency access to properties when occupants or building representatives are unavailable. Milton Fire & Rescue Services uses a Supra key lock box system to support faster and safer emergency response.
Lock boxes are commonly installed at:
-
Multi-unit residential buildings
-
Commercial and industrial properties
-
Facilities with restricted or controlled access
Lock boxes are used only for emergency access.
Lock boxes help:
-
Provide immediate access during fire or medical emergencies
-
Reduce forced-entry damage to doors and windows
-
Improve response times
-
Support firefighter safety during emergency operations
Use the Emergency Building Access (Supra) form to:
-
Install a Supra Key Box
-
Register or update a Supra lock box
Keeping this information up to date helps ensure emergency crews can respond efficiently when access is required.
