Fireworks

Fireworks can pose serious safety risks when not properly controlled, including injury, fire, and property damage. To protect residents, property, and emergency responders, the Town of Milton regulates the sale, use, and discharge of fireworks under the Fireworks By-law 088-2023.

This page explains what is permitted, what is prohibited, and how organizations or individuals can apply to host a public fireworks display that meets safety and by-law requirements.

Fireworks regulations in Milton

Fireworks regulations in Milton focus on safety, accountability, and controlled use.

Under Fireworks By-law 088-2023, the sale, distribution, and discharge of consumer fireworks are prohibited in the Town of Milton.

These restrictions were introduced because consumer fireworks are powerful pyrotechnic devices that can cause injury, noise disturbances, fires, and property damage. Most residential properties do not meet the minimum clearance requirements needed to safely discharge fireworks.

Selling fireworks in Milton

The sale and distribution of consumer fireworks are not permitted in Milton.

Retailers or vendors selling consumer fireworks within the Town may be subject to enforcement and fines under the Provincial Offences Act.

Discharging fireworks in Milton

Discharging consumer fireworks is not allowed in Milton.

However, the Town does allow public fireworks displays when all safety and regulatory requirements are met.

Public displays may be considered for community groups, organizations, or individuals planning a structured event and are subject to approval by Milton Fire & Rescue Services.

Public fireworks displays

Public fireworks displays must meet strict safety standards to protect attendees, surrounding properties, and emergency responders.

To host a public fireworks display, the following conditions must be met:

  • Fireworks must be discharged by a licensed Display Supervisor

  • Proof of comprehensive general liability insurance in the amount of $5 million is required

  • A Public Exhibition Permit must be issued by Milton Fire & Rescue Services

  • All safety distances, site requirements, and fire prevention measures must be followed

These requirements help ensure fireworks displays are conducted safely and responsibly.

Applying for a public display permit

Organizations or individuals interested in hosting a public fireworks display must apply for a Public Exhibition Fireworks Permit through Milton Fire & Rescue Services.

Permit applications are reviewed to ensure safety standards, site suitability, and insurance requirements are met before approval is granted.

Reporting fireworks by-law concerns

If you observe fireworks activity that does not comply with the Fireworks By-law, you can report a concern using the online reporting form.

For situations that require immediate attention, contact police directly.

Reporting helps the Town track concerns and support community safety.
