Overview

Milton is working to improve energy efficiency across Town facilities and operations while supporting a more sustainable community.

This page provides an overview of the Town’s energy-related plans and highlights projects that reduce energy use, lower operating costs, and support long-term environmental goals.

Plans and strategies

The Town’s energy work is guided by corporate and community-wide plans that set priorities and targets.

  • Corporate Energy Plan – outlines how the Town improves energy performance in municipal facilities and operations

  • Community Energy Plan – identifies opportunities to reduce energy use and emissions across Milton

These plans support broader environmental planning, sustainability, and conservation efforts that align with the Green Energy Act.

Energy efficiency projects

Milton has completed a range of projects to improve energy efficiency in facilities, infrastructure, and operations. The examples below highlight key initiatives currently in place. Expand each item to learn more about the type of work completed and where it has been implemented.

About this initiative

Earth Hour is a global event that raises awareness about climate change and energy use. The Town participates each year to encourage conservation and community action.

Locations

  • All Town facilities (depending on program)

About this initiative

Building automation systems helps manage heating and cooling in Town facilities. These systems adjust temperatures based on building use and occupancy, improving energy efficiency and reducing waste.

Locations

  • Milton Leisure Centre

  • Milton Sports Centre

About this initiative

Building envelope upgrades improve how facilities retain heat and reduce energy loss. This includes improvements on insulation, doors, windows, and sealing materials.

Locations

  • Beaty Branch Library

  • Milton Leisure Centre

  • Nassagaweya Community Centre

About this initiative

Switching from gas to electric ice resurfaces reduces the use of fossil fuels in Town facilities. This change lowers greenhouse gas emissions and helps improve indoor air quality.

Locations

  • John Tonelli Community Centre

  • Sherwood Community Centre

About this initiative

Upgrading to LED lighting reduces energy use across Town facilities. LED lights also last longer, which helps lower maintenance needs and replacement costs.

Locations

  • Milton Sports Centre

  • Mattamy National Cycling Centre

  • Milton Leisure Centre

About this initiative

Geothermal systems use the ground to provide heating and cooling. These systems capture, store, and reuse energy, helping reduce overall energy consumption in Town facilities.

Locations

  • Civics Operations Centre

  • Milton Sports Centre

About this initiative

Ice controller upgrades improve how ice surfaces are maintained in Town arenas. These systems help optimize temperature control, reducing energy use and shortening ice-making and maintenance times.

Locations

  • Memorial Arena

  • John Tonelli Arena

About this initiative

The Town applies Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles when designing and upgrading facilities. LEED focuses on improving building performance, using sustainable materials, reducing waste, and supporting recycling during construction.

Locations

  • Beaty Branch Library

  • FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton

  • Mattamy National Cycling Centre

  • Milton Sports Centre Expansion

  • Sherwood Community Centre

  • Town Hall Expansion

About this initiative

LED and solar-powered lighting improves visibility and reduces energy use across municipal infrastructure. These upgrades help lower operating costs, reduce maintenance needs, and improve reliability for traffic and pedestrian safety features.

Locations

  • Throughout Milton

About this initiative

The Town is upgrading street lights on municipal roads to LED technology. These lights use less energy and include adaptive controls that adjust lighting levels as needed. This helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lowers long-term operating costs.

  • Throughout Milton

About this initiative

Solar installations generate clean, renewable electricity at Town facilities. Together, these systems produce about 1 million kilowatt-hours or electricity each year, helping reduce reliance on conventional energy sources.

Locations

  • Milton Sports Centre

  • John Tonelli Sports Centre

  • FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton

  • Sherwood Community Centre

How these projects support the community

Together, these initiatives help the Town:

  • Reduce energy consumption across facilities and infrastructure

  • Lower greenhouse gas emissions

  • Improve operational efficiency and reduce long-term costs

  • Support climate and sustainability goals for the community
