Overview

If your livestock, poultry, or bee colonies have been injured or killed by predatory wildlife, you may be eligible for compensation through a provincially administered program.

This page explains when you can make a livestock claim, how the process works in Milton, and what to do if you need to report a farm animal that is at large. It is intended to help livestock owners understand their responsibilities and take the correct next steps.

Who this is for

This page is for:

  • Livestock and poultry owners in Milton

  • Beekeepers whose colonies, beehives, or beehive equipment have been damaged by wildlife

  • Residents who need to report a domestic farm animal that is at large or trespassing

About the compensation program

Livestock claims in Milton are handled through the Ontario Wildlife Damage Compensation Program.

This provincial program provides compensation to eligible producers when livestock, poultry, or bee colonies are injured or killed by predatory wildlife, or when bee‑related equipment is damaged by wildlife.

The Town of Milton’s role is to receive reports and arrange for inspection. Eligibility, valuation, and compensation decisions are governed by provincial program rules.

How to make a livestock claim

If your livestock, poultry, or bee colony has been injured or killed by wildlife, you must notify the Town as soon as possible.

Once you contact the Town:

  • A Livestock Valuer will be assigned

  • The Valuer will inspect the damage to confirm cause and loss

  • Your claim information will be submitted for review under the provincial program

Timely reporting is important, as delays may affect inspection and eligibility.

What happens after you report a claim

After the inspection:

  • You may be contacted if additional information is required

  • You will be advised of the outcome once the review is complete

Compensation is not guaranteed and depends on program rules, findings from the inspection, and confirmation of wildlife involvement.

Reporting a farm animal at large

If you see a domestic farm animal running at large or trespassing, you should report it to the Town.

Domestic farm animals are not permitted to run at large or trespass on any highway, public land, or private property in Milton.

The person or corporation that owns or controls the animal may be responsible for:

  • Any related impound fees

  • Damage caused to property
