Property owners in Milton may qualify for programs that provide relief from property taxes in certain situations. You may apply for a tax cancellation, reduction, or refund if your property has been affected by specific changes. These applications are submitted under Sections 357 and 358 of the Municipal Act, 2001.
You may be eligible if:

You could not use your property due to repairs or renovation for at least three months

The use of a non-residential property has changed since the last returned assessment

A property becomes exempt after the return of the assessment roll

A fire or demolition has occurred

A mobile unit has been removed from the property
-
A property has become vacant or excess land
-
You were overcharged due to a clerical or factual error
Section 357 (current year changes)
Section 357 applies to changes that occur in the current tax year, such as damage, demolition, or changes in property use.
Applications must be submitted by Feb. 28 of the year following the change.
Section 358 (overcharge corrections)
Section 358 applies to overcharges caused by gross or factual errors in the assessment roll. This does not apply to differences in judgment when assessing a property.
Applications must be submitted between March 1 and Dec. 31, for up to two previous taxation years.
To apply for a tax cancellation, reduction, or refund:

Include any supporting documents related to your application.
In certain circumstances, you may apply for property tax relief if you are experiencing sickness or extreme financial hardship.
Applications are governed by Section 357(1)(d.1) of the Municipal Act, 2001.

There are two tax deferral programs available to eligible residents in Milton.
If you are at least 65 years old and own a home in Milton, you may qualify for Halton Region’s Older Adults Property Tax Deferral Program. This program allows you to defer your annual property taxes and interest fees.
If you are a low-income senior or a person with a disability, you may qualify for a program that defers increases in your property taxes.
Complete an application form and submit it to Town Hall (150 Mary St.) to apply.
The Province of Ontario offers programs that provide additional tax relief. These programs are administered through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) as part of your income tax return.
The Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit helps low- to moderate-income residents with sales tax on energy and property taxes. A rebate of up to $1,461 may be available for eligible individuals.

The Charity Rebate Program provides relief to registered charities that occupy commercial or industrial properties. If your charity meets all eligibility requirements, a portion of your annual tax liability may be refunded.
