Event Requirements & Safety Standards

This page outlines the permits, licences, and safety requirements you may need to plan and run an event in Milton. 

This information applies to events on both public and private property. Requirements may vary depending on your event location, size, and activities.

Event requirements 

Event requirements include the permits, licences, and approvals you may need to run your event safely and legally on public or private property.  

We will guide you through the municipal, regional, provincial, and federal requirements that apply to your event.  

Building permits 

You need a building permit if you are setting up tents, bleachers, stages, or other temporary structures. Allow at least four weeks for review.  

Facility rentals 

You must book your event space before submitting your application. 

Filming 

You need a filming permit to film on Town property. Permits are only issued for approved filming projects. Apply at least seven business days before your event.  

Insurance 

You must have insurance for your event. The Town reviews your coverage as part of the application process. 

Lottery licences 

You need a lottery licence for raffles or other charitable gaming activities. Only eligible charitable or religious organizations can apply.  

Municipal licences and permits 

Depending on your event, you may need additional municipal licences. This may include:  

Road closures 

You can request a road closure through your event application. For neighbourhood events, you can also request a street party using the street party form. 

Signs 

Event signage is generally limited to private property. You can apply for: 

Weddings 

In most cases, a special event application is not required for weddings.  

However, some permits may still apply depending on your setup, such as tents, noise exemptions, or road closures.

Health and safety requirements 

Health and safety requirements help keep your event safe for attendees, staff, and the surrounding community.  

Depending on your event activities, you may need to meet additional provincial or regional requirements.  

Alcohol requirements 

You need a Special Occasion Permit from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) to serve or sell alcohol. Apply at least eight weeks before your event.   

Electrical equipment and generators 

If you use generators or temporary power, you need a permit and inspection from the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). Apply at least six weeks before your event.  

Food and waste 

If you prepare or serve food, you need approval from Halton Public Health. Halton Region may also provide waste collection services for events. 

Niagara Escarpment 

If your event is within the Niagara Escarpment area, you may need a development permit. Check the Niagara Escarpment Commission map to confirm.   

Paramedic services 

You can request onsite medical support from Halton Paramedic Services. Submit your request at least eight weeks in advance.   

Police services 

You can book off-duty officers through Halton Regional Police for traffic control, security, or crowd management. Submit your request at least eight weeks in advance.
