Overview
Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) is a technology used by the Town of Milton to support parking enforcement and improve compliance with parking regulations. The system helps staff identify vehicles that may be parked in violation of municipal by-laws. LPR uses cameras mounted on by-law enforcement vehicles to scan and record licence plates. This approach helps improve efficiency and allows for more consistent enforcement across the community.
The information below explains how the LPR system works, what happens if a violation occurs, and what to do if you receive a ticket.
The LPR system automatically scans licence plates of parked vehicles and checks them against parking regulations. If a violation is identified, a ticket may be issued and mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.
If a violation occurs, each ticket includes:
-
Details of the parking violation
-
An image of the vehicle and licence plate
-
Payment and dispute options
A $10 standard mail service fee applies to tickets, in accordance with the User Fees By-law.
LPR enforcement focuses on areas where safety and compliance are most important.
-
School and community safety zones
-
Overnight on-street parking compliance
These priorities help ensure that enforcement activities address areas with the highest impact on safety and access.
The Town of Milton uses LPR technology in a way that protects personal privacy.
-
Images of people and unrelated vehicles are blurred where possible
-
Recorded data is used only for enforcement purposes
-
Information is managed in accordance with applicable municipal policies
These measures help ensure that data is collected and used responsibly.
