Planning an Electrified Fleet

Overview

The Town of Milton is planning the transition to a zero-emission transit fleet. This work supports climate action goals and prepares Milton Transit for future growth.

Purpose of the plan

The Zero Emission Bus Feasibility Strategy and Fleet Transition Plan outlines how Milton Transit can move from diesel buses to electric buses over time. It provides a roadmap for purchasing vehicles, building infrastructure, and adapting operations.

This plan helps the Town reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve long-term sustainability, and support a reliable and modern transit system.

Key objectives

This plan focuses on:

  • Transitioning Milton Transit to a zero-emission fleet by 2040

  • Reducing reliance on fossil fuels

  • Aligning with the Town’s Climate Emergency declaration

  • Ensuring transit remains efficient and cost-effective

Key initiatives and findings

The feasibility study, funded in part by Infrastructure Canada’s Zero Emissions Transit Fund, explored key requirements for electrification.

It identified the following areas for planning and decision-making:

  • Impact on daily transit operations

  • Market conditions and available technology

  • Power supply and infrastructure needs

  • Budgeting and lifecycle costs

  • Route and schedule adjustments

  • Internal and external stakeholder needs

  • Emission reduction opportunities

  • Technical specifications for buses, chargers, and software

  • Phasing and timelines for fleet electrification

Together, these findings help guide how Milton Transit will implement electric buses over time.

Timeline and status

The Zero Emission Fleet Transition Plan is a long-term strategy that guides implementation through to 2040. The transition will happen gradually to allow time to build charging infrastructure, align with fleet replacement cycles, and gain operational experience with battery electric bus (BEB) technology.
