Transit Accessibility

Transit Accessibility

Transit should be usable by everyone. To achieve this objective, Milton Transit focuses on removing barriers that may prevent people from using public transportation. Accessible transit supports travel to work, school, medical appointments, shopping, and social activities. When services are accessible, they benefit the entire community. Consistent with requirements under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Milton Transit is committed to continually improving accessibility on all services provided.

Milton Transit Accessibility Plan

Updated annually, the Milton Transit Accessibility Plan identifies current and potential accessibility barriers and outline actions to address them. Learn more.

MagnusCards

Milton Transit is proud to partner with MagnusMode, to support greater independence and inclusion for autistic and neurodivergent people and their caregivers. The MagnusCards app combines structured, step-by-step guidance with game design to help teach a variety of life skills through free downloadable decks of cards.

As part of our support, Milton Transit has funded unique card decks that will help you feel supported and empowered to use our transit system. These cards will help you navigate tasks, such as riding the bus, paying a fare, planning a trip and transferring bus routes.

Accessible policies

Milton Transit works to create an accessible environment for all passengers through our policies. We offer priority and courtesy seating on all buses and allow you to ride with a service animal.

Bus stop signs

All Milton Transit bus stop signs feature clear, large icons and fonts showcasing the stop number and accessible stop information. Featuring a branded regional identifier (the capital "T" at the top for transit), the signs are double sided, printed on reflective material with high contrast colours to help with visibility—even at night.

Milton access+ specialized service

We provide specialized transit for eligible individuals with disabilities who are unable to regularly use conventional services for some or all of their trips. Learn more about Milton access+, including eligibility, service hours and how to book a trip.

Onboard accessibility features

Accessible features on Milton Transit buses

Milton Transit buses are equipped with features that make travel more accessible for customers with disabilities, customers who use mobility devices and anyone who needs extra support. You can ask the operator for help at any point during your trip.

Mobility device ramps

Every bus has a ramp at the front door for customers who use mobility devices or need step-free access. Ask the operator to deploy the ramp when you board or exit.

Bus-lowering feature

The operator can lower the front entrance to reduce the height of the step between the curb and the bus. Ask the operator to lower the bus if you need this feature.

Mobility device spaces

Each bus has two dedicated spaces for customers who use mobility devices. Front and rear securement belts are available in each space.

Grab bars and slip-resistant flooring

High-contrast stanchions and grab bars are located throughout the bus so they are easier to see and reach. Brightly coloured, slip-resistant flooring provides added stability.

Pre-boarding and next-stop announcements

Audio and visual pre-boarding announcements provide route and destination information before customers board. Onboard audio announcements and visual displays identify upcoming stops.

Stop-request buttons and pull-cords

Stop-request buttons and pull-cords are located throughout the bus. For stop-request buttons, one chime confirms a standard stop request, while a request made from a mobility device space sounds two chimes. The stop-request sign also lights up.

Priority and courtesy seating

Priority and courtesy seats are located near the front of the bus for customers who need easier access to seating. Please offer these seats to a customer who needs one. Learn more.

Onboard security cameras

All buses are equipped with onboard security cameras to support customer and operator safety. The system is not monitored in real time. Recordings are reviewed only when required for safety, security, claims or operational investigations. Learn more.
