Pedestrian Safety

The Town of Milton is committed to keeping pedestrians safe. We use a variety of crossings so that pedestrians can move safely through our town.

It is always important for pedestrians to be aware of traffic, follow the rules of the road, and take steps to be seen. Please also use pedestrian crossings whenever available to reduce risks and improve road safety.

Learn more about being a safe pedestrian below.

Roundabouts

Roundabouts improve traffic flow and reduce collisions.

Roundabout safety tips for pedestrians:

  • Pedestrians must cross only at marked crosswalks.

  • Push the pedestrian button if present.

  • Step to the curb and wait for a safe gap.

  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

  • Wait on the splitter island if needed.

Pedestrian crossovers (PXOs)

A pedestrian crossover (PXO) is a designated mid-block crossing where pedestrians can safely cross the road without jaywalking.

PXOs are marked, with signs, pedestrian-activated push buttons, and flashing lights at some locations.

Pedestrians must activate lights when available and cross only when vehicles have completely stopped. Drivers and cyclists must stop and remain stopped until the pedestrian has completely crossed the road. Cyclists must dismount and walk bikes through the crossing.

Failing to obey may result in a fine and three demerit points.

Types of pedestrian crossovers (PXOs)

There are three types of PXOs used in Milton. Expand each type below to learn how they are marked and how they operate.

Pedestrian crossing with overhead flashing beacons at an intersection

Overhead flashing beacon PXOs are highly visible and are typically used at busier locations. Signals are mounted above the roadway to increase visibility for approaching drivers.

Features include:

  • Marked crossing area

  • Designated stopping area for vehicles and cyclists

  • Roadside signs

  • Button-activated rectangular rapid flashing beacons

  • Overhead signage

Side-mounted flashing beacon PXOs are installed at the side of the road and provide clear visual cues to approaching drivers.

Features include:

  • Marked crossing area

  • Designated stopping area for vehicles and cyclists

  • Roadside signs

  • Button-activated rectangular rapid flashing beacons

Pedestrian crossing with side-mounted flashing beacons.

Painted PXOs are used on lower-volume roads and rely on pavement markings and signage rather than flashing signals.

Features include:

  • Marked crossing area

  • Designated stopping area for vehicles and cyclists

  • Roadside signs

Stay alert and know your role

Whether you are walking, driving, or cycling, staying alert and understanding how crossings work helps keep everyone safe.

  • Always follow posted crossing signals and signage

  • Watch for pedestrians entering or waiting at crossings

  • Reduce speed and be prepared to stop

  • Make eye contact with the driver/pedestrian/cyclist when possible to confirm intent

Being aware of your surroundings and following the rules of the road helps reduce risk and improve safety for all road users.
