Street Party Permit

A street party permit is required to temporarily close a residential road in the Town of Milton for a neighbourhood gathering. This permit allows residents to host community events safely while ensuring access for emergency services and minimizing disruption to surrounding areas. 

Street parties are free of charge, but planning is required. Before applying, you must gather support from your neighbours, arrange insurance, and meet all safety requirements. You must submit your application at least four weeks before your event to allow time for review and approvals.

This permit is for: 

  • Residents organizing a neighbourhood street party 

  • Groups planning a temporary residential road closure for a community event 

Before you apply 

Before submitting your application, review these requirements to ensure your event is eligible.
 

Eligibility and community support 

  • You must gather support from at least 80% of affected residents directly impacted by the road closure 

  • A petition must be completed and submitted as part of your application 

Event and safety requirements 

  • The road closure must be for a neighbourhood event on a residential street 

  • You are responsible for event setup, safety, and cleanup 

Equipment and setup 

  • Two sets of wooden barricades and road closure signs must be installed 

  • The Town does not supply barricades or signage
     

What you need 

To apply for a street party permit, you will need: 

  • Completed petition with required resident support 

  • Event details (date, time, location) 

  • Proof of insurance 

Insurance 

Applicants must provide general liability insurance for the event. 

  • Minimum of $5 million coverage 

  • Must name The Corporation of the Town of Milton as additional insured 

  • Must include cross-liability coverage 

How to apply 

Follow these steps to apply for a street party permit: 

  1. Complete the online submission form at least four weeks before your event. 

  1. Circulate a petition to collect signatures from at least 80% of affected residents. 

  1. Arrange general liability insurance that meets Town requirements. 

  1. Submit your application for a street party permit along with your petition and proof of insurance. 

  1. Wait for review and respond to any follow-up requests. 

Fees 

There is no fee for a street party permit. 

Processing time 

Processing times depend on when your application is submitted and whether all requirements are met. 

  • Applications must be submitted at least four weeks before the event 

  • Additional time may be required if information is missing 

  • You will be notified once your permit is approved 

After you apply 

Once your application is submitted: 

  • Staff review your submission, including the petition and insurance documents 

  • You may be contacted for additional information 

  • If your request is approved, you will be asked to make an appointment to pick up your Street Party Permit and drop off any required forms and deposits
