Overview
Additional residential unit (ARU) registrations must be renewed annually to remain compliant with Town of Milton by-laws.
ARU compliance certificates are valid for one year from the date they are issued. To keep your ARU in good standing, you must renew your registration before it expires. This page outlines renewal requirements, what information you will need to confirm, and what happens if changes have been made to your ARU since the previous registration period.
The ARU registration program is currently operating as a three-year pilot that launched in 2025. At the end of the pilot, the program will be reviewed, and registration and renewal requirements may change.
This page is for:
-
Property owners with a registered ARU
-
Homeowners whose ARU compliance certificate is nearing expiry
-
Property owners renewing an existing ARU registration
During the Town's three-year ARU registration pilot program:
-
There is no fee to renew an ARU registration
-
ARU registrations must still be renewed annually
-
Property owners are responsible for ensuring their ARU continues to meet all applicable requirements
Approximately 30 days before your registration expires, the Town will send a renewal reminder by email to the registered property owner.
Renewing an ARU registration is a confirmation process that helps ensure the unit continues to comply with applicable safety, zoning, and property standards requirements.
-
Complete the renewal form
The ARU renewal form will be sent to you via email 30 days before your registration expires. Complete and submit the ARU renewal form by email by the deadline identified in the renewal notice.
-
Confirm your information
By submitting the renewal form, you confirm that:
-
Property ownership and contact information are current
-
The ARU has not been altered, modified, or expanded since the last approval or renewal
-
The unit continues to comply with all applicable municipal by-laws
-
The unit continues to meet all required standards, including the Ontario Building Code, Ontario Fire Code, applicable Zoning By-law, and Property Standards By-law
-
The Town may verify the information submitted as part of the renewal process
If changes or modifications have been made to your ARU since the previous approval or renewal, you must notify the Town.
Depending on the nature of the changes, additional approvals or inspections may be required before the registration can be renewed.
It is important to renew your ARU registration before it expires.
Failure to renew may result in enforcement action under applicable legislation.
