Street Naming

Notice: Temporary pause on Street Name Nominations

The Town of Milton is temporarily pausing new submissions to the Street Name Nomination Program, effective immediately.

The program currently has many approved street names waiting to be assigned to new streets. This pause will give staff time to review and process the existing nominations fairly and thoroughly.
We appreciate the community’s interest and participation in the program. All nominations already submitted will still be reviewed.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

Overview

Street names help people navigate the community, support emergency response services, and reflect Milton's history, geography, and cultural heritage. The Town's Street Naming Program establishes how new street names are selected and assigned to future roads within Milton.

Before submitting a street name nomination, review the naming criteria, available street name resources, and Street Naming Policy to ensure the proposed name aligns with Town requirements.

Street naming resources

The following resources can help you determine whether a name has already been submitted, approved, or assigned.

Existing street names in Milton

The Town of Milton keeps and updates a comprehensive list of all existing street names. Before submitting a nomination, review the list to ensure your proposed name has not already been assigned to a street in Milton.

Street name bank

The Street Name Bank contains names that have been approved and are waiting to be assigned to future streets.

The list identifies:

  • The Milton Council resolution or report associated with the name

  • The year the name was added to the bank

  • Whether the name commemorates a veteran

  • Whether the name has historical significance

Alternate street name bank

The Alternate Street Name Bank contains approved names that may be considered for future street allocations if:

  • Similar street names in other Halton municipalities no longer conflict with Halton Emergency Partners protocols

  • Future technology improves the availability of advanced street-name screening tools

How streets receive names

New street names are approved by Milton Council through the Street Name Nomination Program. Proposed names are reviewed by Town staff and emergency service partners before being added to the Street Name Bank and assigned to new roads.

Street naming criteria

Street names should reflect Milton’s history, geography, community contributions, and cultural heritage.

Accepted street names

Street names may recognize:

  • Historic events, land uses, buildings, sites, or landscapes

  • Individuals, families, organizations, or businesses that have contributed to Milton, Halton Region, or local history

  • Military service members and fallen veterans

  • Geographic features, neighbourhood names, planning areas, and natural features

  • Community celebrations and commemorative initiatives

Street names that are not accepted

The Town will not consider names that:

  • Duplicate or closely resemble existing street names

  • Could be interpreted as advertising

  • Are discriminatory

  • Imply political affiliation

Street name nominations

Street names may be nominated for Council consideration through the Street Name Nomination Program.

To nominate a street name:

  1. Complete a street name nomination using the online Suggest a Name form.

Please note that new submissions are currently paused. Review the notice above for the latest program status.

Street name allocation

Approved names are added to the Street Name Bank and assigned as new roads are created. Depending on development activity within Milton, a street name may remain in the Street Name Bank for three to five years before being allocated to a new street.
