Vehicle for Hire

If you plan to operate a vehicle for hire in Milton, you must have the appropriate licence before beginning service. This includes drivers, vehicle owners, and brokerage operators.  

Vehicle for hire licences help ensure that services are safe, properly insured, and meet the Town’s requirements. All licence holders must follow the Vehicle for Hire By-law.

Vehicle for hire driver’s licence 

If you plan to drive a vehicle for hire or limousine, you must apply for a Vehicle for Hire driver’s licence.

  • A valid driver’s licence 

  • Police clearance check 

  • Letter of employment

Vehicle for hire owner’s licence 

If you own a vehicle for hire or limousine, you must apply for a Vehicle for Hire owner’s licence before operating.

When applying, you must provide: 

  • Business registration (proof of registration) 

  • Vehicle ownership documentation 

  • Vehicle liability insurance (minimum $2 million) 

  • Certificate of mechanical fitness 

  • Completed vehicle inspection 

  • Affiliated brokerage information (if required)

Broker’s licence 

If you operate a business that dispatches or coordinates vehicles for hire or limousine services, you must apply for a Vehicle for Hire broker’s licence.

When applying, you must provide: 

  • Business registration documents 

  • Proof of liability insurance (minimum $2 million) 

  • Proof of zoning compliance 

  • Proof of available off-street parking spaces

After you submit your application, Town staff will review your documents to ensure all requirements are met. You may be contacted if additional information is needed. Once approved, you will receive your licence and instructions for next steps. 

Your licence is not valid until it has been issued.
