Business Licences

If you operate a business in Milton, you may need a business licence before you begin operating. Business licences help ensure that businesses meet local safety, health, and regulatory requirements. 

You need a business licence if you operate certain types of businesses, including personal services, food trucks (commercial refreshment vehicles), salvage yards, or kennels. 

This page outlines what you need to apply, how the process works, and the types of licences available so you can get started. 

Who this is for 

Business owners opening a new business in Milton, existing businesses that require a licence to operate, and some home-based business operators. 

What you need 

Before you apply, make sure you have: 

  • A completed business licence application 

  • All required supporting documents (listed on the application form) 

  • Any required approvals (for example, public health or zoning requirements) 

Depending on your business type, additional documentation may be required. 

Fees 

Fees vary depending on the type of application and are prorated based on when your application is received during the year. 

Once your application is reviewed and approved, you will receive an invoice.

You can pay: 

  • In person: debit, cash, or cheque 

  • By mail or drop box: cheque only 

Application deadline 

All business licences expire at the end of February each year.

Licence types 

The following sections describe the different types of business licences.

A personal services licence is required if your business provides services involving personal care or contact with the body. 

This may include: 

  • Acupuncture 

  • Hair cutting 

  • Manicuring and nail treatments 

  • Electrolysis 

  • Aesthetics 

  • Tattooing or micro-pigmentation 

  • Body and ear piercing 

  • Other body-related services 

Additional requirement: 

You must include a copy of your Regional Health Inspection with your completed application.

A kennel licence is required if you: 

  • Board, breed, harbour, or train more than three dogs, or 

  • Board, breed, harbour, or train five cats 

Additional requirement: 

You must provide an up-to-date site map showing where the kennel is located on the property. 

A salvage yard licence is required for properties where: 

  • Motor vehicle parts are stored or sold, or 

  • Equipment, appliances, scrap material, or salvage is kept for dismantling 

This includes automotive wrecking yards.

Before you apply: additional requirements 

Some businesses may need approval from other departments or agencies before submitting an application. 

Certificate of occupancy 

New or home-based businesses may require a Certificate of Occupancy before applying for a business licence. 

Public health notification 

If your business falls into one of the six categories, you must notify Halton Region Public Health when opening, reopening, or making changes to operations. 

You may need to notify Public Health if you are: 

  • Opening a new business 

  • Reopening a seasonal business 

  • Renovating your space 

  • Changing services or operations 

To notify Public Health: 

  • If you cannot apply online, call 3-1-1 to speak with a Public Health Inspector
     

How to apply 

  1. Gather all required supporting documentation. 

  1. Submit your application to the Town.  

  1. Wait for review and approval. 

After you apply 

After you submit your application, Town staff will review your documents and ensure all requirements are met. You may be contacted for additional information. Once approved, you will receive instructions to complete payment.  

Your licence is not valid until approval and payment are complete.
