Overview
The Town of Milton assigns municipal addresses when a new construction application is submitted or when a new lot is created. Municipal addresses help identify properties for emergency services, deliveries, utility providers, and municipal records.
For corner lots, the municipal address is assigned based on the street where the driveway access is located. Canada Post is responsible for assigning postal codes. Before requesting address information or an address change, review the requirements that apply to your property.
This information is for:
-
New property owners
-
Property owners in urban areas
-
Property owners in rural areas
-
Residents requesting a municipal address change
-
Anyone requiring information about a municipal address
If you are unsure whether your property is located in an urban or rural area, contact the Town of Milton at 905-878-7252 ext. 2398.
Before calling, have your:
-
Assessment roll number or PIN
-
Street name
If you do not know your assessment roll number, contact the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) or refer to your property tax bill.
If you recently purchased a newly constructed home and need to confirm your municipal address, contact your builder.
Builders are responsible for putting up the house number for new homes.
If you own a home in a rural area, you are responsible for purchasing, installing, and maintaining a green municipal address sign. These signs are required at the entrance to your property so emergency responders can clearly identify your address.
You may purchase a green municipal address sign from any sign company that meets the Town's green municipal address sign standards. Review the rural address sign flyer for additional information.
Municipal address changes are considered on a case-by-case basis. Addresses are assigned using a pre-determined numbering system to help ensure consistency, avoid duplicate addresses, and support emergency services.
To request a municipal address change:
-
Complete the Address Number Change Application Form online.
If your municipal address change application is approved, a Municipal Housing Number Change fee must be paid before the address is officially changed.
Town staff will review your application and determine whether the requested address change can be accommodated. Approval is not guaranteed. Address changes must align with the Town's address numbering system and emergency service requirements.
If additional information is required, staff will contact you.
