Overview
If you want to install a permanent sign to advertise your business or service in Milton, you must apply for a sign permit before installing the sign. Sign permits help ensure signage is safe, meets zoning and design standards, and fits within the surrounding area. The Town’s Sign By-law regulates the size, location, and maintenance of permanent signs on private property.

Before you apply, make sure you have:

Two copies of a site plan showing:

The sign location
-

Setbacks for ground signs
-

Location of fascia signs, if applicable, or digital drawings

Two copies of construction drawings, or digital drawings
-
Information about all existing signs on the property

An application fee applies for all permanent sign permits, review User Fee By-laws.
You will be required to pay the fee as part of the application process.
If your proposed sign does not meet the requirements outlined in the Sign By-law, you must apply for a sign variance.
Submit a completed sign variance application:

By mail or in person at Development Services, 150 Mary St., Milton, ON L9T 6Z5
To be approved, you must demonstrate that your proposed sign meets the intent of the Sign By-law.
All permanent signs must follow the Sign By-law and meet the following general requirements:

Be consistent with the planning, design, and heritage of Milton

Not pose a health or safety risk to motorists or pedestrians

Not obstruct nearby businesses or services
-
Be compatible with the surrounding area
These guidelines help ensure signage is safe, functional, and appropriate for the community.

Complete the Application for a Permit to Construct or Demolish.

Gather all required drawings and supporting documents.

Submit your completed application online to Development Services.

Wait for review and approval.
After you submit your application, Town staff will review your drawings and supporting documents.
You may be contacted if additional information is needed. Once approved, you can proceed with installing your sign in accordance with the approved plans.
