If you want to operate a food truck, ice cream truck, or other refreshment vehicle in Milton, you must have the appropriate business licence before you begin operating. 

Food truck licences help ensure that vehicles meet safety, health, and operational requirements, including public health, fire safety, and zoning standards.

This licence is for: 

  • Residents and businesses planning to operate a food truck or mobile refreshment vehicle in Milton 

  • Operators of ice cream trucks or similar mobile food services 

  • Existing operators who need to apply for or update a licence 

What you need 

Before you apply, make sure you have: 

  • All required supporting documents listed on the application form 

  • Any required approvals (for example, Public Health or Fire Services) 

Depending on your vehicle type, additional documentation may be required.
 

Operator licences 

In addition to licensing the vehicle, operators must also meet licensing requirements. 

Before operating a food truck, you need to complete a business licence application and submit all required documentation to the Town. 

Fees 

A yearly licence fee applies depending on your vehicle classification. 

Once your application is reviewed and approved, you will receive an invoice with payment instructions.

Vehicle classifications 

Different licence types apply depending on the type of vehicle and how food or beverages are prepared and served.

A Class A vehicle is used when food is prepared at a separate location, such as a commissary or commercial kitchen, rather than inside the vehicle. 

This classification typically includes catering trucks. 

A Class B vehicle is used to sell pre-packaged frozen products only. 

This classification typically includes ice cream trucks. 

A Class C vehicle is a non-motorized refreshment vehicle that does not require a health certificate from the Medical Officer of Health.  

These vehicles only sell pre-packaged frozen products.  

This classification typically includes ice cream bikes, yogurt carts, and juice carts.

A Class D vehicle is used when some food is prepared inside the vehicle.  

This classification typically includes hot dog carts and chip trucks. 

A Class E vehicle is used for charitable or non-profit events only. 

How to apply

  1. Submit your completed application to Licensing at Town Hall or online

  1. Wait for review and approval 

After you apply 

After you submit your application, Town staff will review your documents to ensure all requirements are met. You may be contacted if additional information is needed. Once approved, you will receive instructions to complete payment.  

Your licence is not valid until approval and payment are complete.
