Tent Permits

A building permit may be required if you plan to erect a tent or group of tents in Milton. Permit requirements are based on the size, location, and configuration of the tent structure. 

Some tent installations may also require professional engineering review. Before planning your event, review the permit requirements, required documents, and site information to help ensure your tent installation meets all applicable safety requirements. 

A building permit is required for the installation of a tent where:

  • A single tent exceeds 60 m² in ground area; 

  • Two or more tents, located less than 3 m from each other, exceed 60 m² in combined ground area; 

  • The tent is attached to a building; or 

  • The tent is located less than 3 m from another structure.

Required information 

Provide the following information with your application: 

  • Purpose of the tent 

  • Company name 

  • Address 

  • Size of the tent 

  • Number of tents 

  • Installation location 

  • Proposed dates of use 

  • Tent capacity 

Required documents 

Submit the following documents with your application: 

  • Certificate of flame resistance 

  • Schematic engineer drawings of the tent 

  • Site plan 

  • Floor plan 

  • Engineer drawings of the anchoring system 

Additional information, if applicable 

Depending on the nature of the event, you may also need to provide: 

  • Number and location of washrooms 

  • Information about alcoholic beverage service 

  • Details about cooking equipment and the distance from the tent 

  • Information about available parking 

Engineering requirements 

Certain tent installations require professional engineering review and supporting documentation. 

Professional engineer review is required for tents that: 

  • Exceed 225 m² in ground area 

  • Exceed 225 m² in aggregate ground area and are located within 3 m of other tents or structures 

  • Include bleachers 

  • Are enclosed with sidewalls 

Providing complete engineering documentation at the time of application can help prevent delays during the review process.

Applicable fees must be paid when you submit your application. 

How to apply 

  1. Submit your completed application through the online portal, including all supporting drawings and documents. 

After you apply 

Town staff will review your application, drawings, and supporting documentation to confirm compliance with the Ontario Building Code and applicable safety requirements. 

If additional information is required, staff will contact you. Applications requiring professional engineering review may require additional review time.
