Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms must be installed:

  • On each level of your home
  • Outside all sleeping areas

Important reminders:

  • Test smoke alarms monthly  

  • Check the expiry date or replace alarms every 10 years  

  • Change alarm batteries once a year  

  • When replacing a smoke alarm, note that hardwired alarms must be replaced with hardwired units.

Carbon monoxide, known as the “Silent Killer” is an invisible, odourless and colourless gas.

Being prepared is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones. 

Use this checklist to help keep your home safe and free of hazards: 

  • Test all smoke alarms and replace any that are expired  

  • Ensure CO alarms are installed outside every sleeping area and on each level of the home  

  • Create and practice a family escape plan  

  • Identify and maintain two clear exits from each room  

  • Keep the area around the furnace clear of stored items  

  • Stay alert while cooking  

  • Check electrical cords and replace any that are damaged  

  • Blow out all candles before leaving the room  

  • Keep space heaters away from anything that can burn  

  • Dispose of cigarettes safely and properly  

  • Maintain a clear area around your sump pump  

  • Charge electronic devices only on a hard, flat surface  

  • Have all fuel-burning appliances inspected annually by a qualified technician
