Cycling is a healthy and active way to get around. It plays a key role in Milton’s current and future transportation system.

Stay Safe When You Ride

Follow these rules to protect yourself and others:

  • Helmets – Required for riders under 18 and strongly recommended for all cyclists.
  • Lights – A white front light and red rear light or reflector are required when riding 30 minutes before sunset to 30 minutes after sunrise.
  • Bell or Horn – Your bike must have a working bell or horn.
  • Brakes – Your bike must have a functional braking system.
  • Sidewalks – Cycling is not allowed on sidewalks, except for children under 11 riding bikes with wheels smaller than 20 inches. An adult must accompany a child.
  • Dismount – Walk your bike across PXOs and pedestrian crosswalks at intersections.
  • Riding to school – Ensure you know how to ride safely near schools.

Roundabouts

Roundabouts improve traffic flow and reduce collisions.

Roundabout safety tips for cyclists

  • Merge into the center of the lane before entering.
  • Use hand signals to show your route.
  • Ride in the middle of the lane to avoid right-turning vehicles.
  • Walk your bike across pedestrian crosswalks.
