School zones are high-traffic areas where drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians must stay alert and follow safety rules.
The Town of Milton has policies in place to improve school zone safety. Here’s how we can all contribute.
Crossing guards
Crossing guards help children and pedestrians cross safely near elementary schools by temporarily stopping traffic.
Drivers:
- Stop when a crossing guard raises their sign.
- Wait until the guard and pedestrians are completely off the road before proceeding.
Pedestrians:
- Wait for the crossing guard to lift the sign before crossing.
- Follow the guard’s instructions for safe crossing.
Cyclists and scooter riders:
- Walk your bike or scooter through the crossing—riding is not allowed.

School Crossings
At a school crossing, pedestrians have the right of way only when a crossing guard is present.
School crossing are different from pedestrian crossovers (PXOs). As always watch for traffic before crossing.

School drop-off zones (Kiss and Rides)
Some schools have designated drop-off zones for students. Obey all signs in these areas. These zones:
- Are available at select schools.
- May be prioritized for kindergarten students and children with special needs.
- Monitored by by-law enforcement and through license plate recognition (LPR).
Pedestrian crossings
Students and families should use pedestrian crossings when available. These are often located at signalized intersections or marked crosswalks to improve safety.
Some pedestrian crossovers (PXOs) have rectangular rapid flashing beacons. Press the button to activate the beacon and wait for vehicles to stop before crossing.
