Traffic calming

Traffic calming measures—such as speed humps and raised crosswalks —help reduce speeding, enhance safety, and improve quality of life in Milton’s neighborhoods.

Milton’s Traffic Calming Policy outlines guidelines for managing traffic in residential areas.

By combining engineering, education, and enforcement, Milton promotes safe and livable streets.

Traffic Calming Measures

Roundabouts

Roundabouts improve traffic flow and reduce collisions. They help:

  • Lower speeds.
  • Reduce right-angle crashes.
  • Minimize stops and idling, cutting emissions.

Roundabout Safety Tips

Roundabout safety tips for drivers

  • Slow down and plan ahead.
  • Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks and pedestrian crossovers (PXOs).
  • Yield to traffic from the left before entering.
  • Do not pass inside the roundabout.
  • Signal your exit.

See roundabout safety tips for cyclists and pedestrians.

Speed Management

Speed display boards

Radar-based signs detect and display vehicle speeds, reminding drivers to slow down.
School Zone Flashers
Drivers must reduce speed to 40 km/h near designated schools when lights are flashing. When flashing stops, the posted speed limit applies.

Speed limits in Milton

  • 40 or 50 km/h in front of schools (when signs are flashing).
  • 50 km/h in urban areas.
  • 70 km/h in rural areas.

The Town of Milton and Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) monitor speed concerns, collect data, and recommend enforcement when needed.

All-Way Stops

All-way stops help control right-of-way at intersections but are not used for speed control. Before installing one, Town staff conduct:

  • Traffic volume studies to ensure counts meet required levels.
  • Speed studies to assess concerns.
  • Collision analysis to evaluate safety.
