The Town of Milton’s investments in fire prevention and response have led to an improved insurance rating.

In 2024, Milton Fire & Rescue Services was independently evaluated by the Fire Underwriters Survey (FUS), a national organization that represents private-sector property and casualty insurers in Canada.

“Achieving a rating improvement is a significant milestone,” said Peter Gatto, Fire Chief of Milton Fire & Rescue Services. “It means our community is better protected, and our fire services are among the strongest in Canada for a municipality of our size. With Council’s sustained investment in Milton Fire & Rescue Services, we can deliver on our shared goal of protecting our community.”

The rating considers staffing levels, response capabilities, training programs, communications systems, water supply, prevention efforts, and more. It results in an overall risk assessment score that insurance companies use to set premiums for residents and businesses.

The FUS assessment found that the Town had enhanced fire protection since the last review, which has led to a Fire Protection rating improvement for the community.

Enhancements contributing to the improved rating include:

  • 12 new full-time firefighters, a dedicated Fire Prevention Officer, and a Platoon Chief hired this year
  • Faster response time by firefighters to emergencies
  • More fire prevention inspections and stronger pre-plan programs
  • Improved ability to quickly deliver water in rural areas without fire hydrants
  • Improved training, maintenance, and emergency readiness

The improved rating may help reduce insurance premiums and other insurance-related costs. Residents and businesses are encouraged to contact their insurance providers to inquire about possible savings.

Investments in the Town’s fire and rescue services reflect Council’s commitment to fund upgrades to facilities and amenities that maintain service standards, improve quality of life, and benefit residents and the community.
