Milton’s Transportation Master Plan (TMP) outlines a long-term vision for the Town’s transportation network, balancing walking, riding, and driving.

Building on the 2018 TMP, the Town partnered with WSP to develop the 2024 Transportation Master Plan Update. This plan supports Milton’s growth through 2051, incorporating feedback from residents, stakeholders, and Town officials.

This living document is updated every five years.

Goals of the 2024 Transportation Master Plan Update

  • Accommodate future growth and increasing travel demands
  • Enhance mobility across all modes of transportation
  • Ensure equitable and accessible travel for all ages and abilities
  • Promote sustainable transportation options

Key recommendations of the 2024 TMP Update

Active Transportation

  • Upgrade pedestrian and cycling infrastructure using the Complete Streets approach.
  • Expand data collection on pedestrian and cyclist activity.
  • Coordinate plans with Halton Region and the Official Plan.

Transit Improvements

  • Establish transit priority corridors in partnership with Metrolinx and Halton Region.
  • Working to support two-way, all-day GO rail service expansion.
  • Encouraging transit use by improving access to transit services
  • Align transportation planning with the Milton Transit Five-Year Service Plan

Road Network and Rural Milton

  • Improve roadways and intersections based on TMP recommendations.
  • Continue to address rural traffic challenges, considering safety of all road users

Goods Movement

  • Align transportation planning with the Official Plan to minimize conflicts with sensitive land uses.
  • Improve truck route management and cross-municipality co-ordination..

Transportation Demand Management (TDM)

  • Develop a TDM strategy to reduce single-occupant vehicle use.
  • Introduce smart parking management, carpool incentives, and transit discounts.
  • Enhance real-time travel information and public engagement.
  • Encourage bike parking and end-of-trip facilities in new developments.

Traffic Safety

  • Develop a road safety strategy with supporting policies in the Official Plan.

Roadway Classification and Parking

  • Standardize right-of-way widths and update engineering standards.
  • Conduct a parking study to optimize parking availability.

Sustainability and Future Planning

  • Encourage sustainable transportation initiatives
  • Monitor progress using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
