You need a business license if you have a personal services business, a food truck (commercial refreshment vehicle), a salvage yard or a kennel. All required documentation to be submitted can be found on the application form.

Fees

A yearly licence fee applies to all applications. Once your application is reviewed and approved, you will receive an invoice by email (or in person if you applied at Town Hall). Payment options include: 

  • In person: debit, cash, or cheque 

  • By mail or drop box: cheque only 

  • To confirm the fee for your business, contact the Licensing and Enforcement team through the contact form or 905-878-7252, ext. 2105. 

Application deadline 

All business licences expire at the end of February each year.

Personal services licence

A personal services license is required if your business provides personal care for any part of the body and may include: 

  • Acupuncture
  • Hair cutting
  • Manicuring and nail treatments
  • Electrolysis
  • Aesthetics
  • Tattooing or micro-pigmentation
  • Body and ear piercing
  • Any other body-related services

Personal services business owners must include a copy of their Regional Health Inspection with the completed application.

Notification to Public Health

Six business categories are required or recommended to notify Halton Region Public Health whenever they open or reopen their premises to the public or undertake renovations.

To make it simpler and easier for business owners or operators who are required to notify Halton Region Public Health when they are planning to open to the public, reopen (seasonal), undergo renovations or change in operation and/or services provided to the public to notify Public Health, Halton Region has launched a new online notification form. If you are unable to submit this online form, please contact 311 and ask to speak to a Public Health Inspector.

Certificate of Occupancy  

New or home-based businesses may require a Certificate of Occupancy prior to applying for a Business Licence.  Contact the Development Services Department or visit the Development Services counter at Town Hall to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy. 

Kennel licence

A kennel licence is required if you board, breed, harbour or train more than three dogs or five cats. As part of the application process, you must provide an up-to-date site map showing the property where the kennel is located 

Salvage yard licence 

A salvage yard licence is required for any property where motor vehicle parts are stored or sold, or where used equipment, appliances, scrap material or salvage is kept to be wrecked, dismantled or salvaged for sale or disposal. This includes automobile wrecking yards. As part of the application, you must provide an up-to-date site map of the property.
