Information for 2026 Election candidates

Nominations for the Town of Milton’s 2026 Municipal Election open May 1, 2026, and close on Aug. 21, 2026, at 2 p.m.

Interested candidates can file their nominations with the Town of Milton for the offices of: 

  • Mayor 
  • Regional Councillor (Wards 1,2,3 and 4)  
  • Town Councillor (Wards 1,2,3, and 4) 
  • Trustee for the Halton District School Board 
  • Trustee for the Halton Catholic District School Board

Nomination period

The nomination period opens on Friday, May 1, 2026, and closes at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, 2026. Nomination forms must be filed at Town of Milton Town Hall, 150 Mary St.

All candidate services are provided at Town Hall during regular business hours. Appointments are encouraged to ensure timely service, particularly when filing a nomination, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Election staff are available Monday to Friday (excluding holidays) to answer questions and provide election information in person, by phone at 905‑875‑5390 and online during regular business hours.

A person cannot raise or spend money on their election campaign until they have filed a Nomination Form with the Town Clerk or a designated election official. 

Candidate eligibility

Mayor or councillor candidate

To run for a position on Milton Town Council, you must be eligible to vote in the municipality.

On the day you file your nomination, you must be:

  • A Canadian citizen
  • At least 18 years of age
  • A resident of the Town of Milton, or
  • An owner or tenant of land in the Town of Milton, or the spouse of the owner or tenant
  • Not legally prohibited from voting
  • Not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office

Who cannot be a mayor or councillor candidate

The following people are disqualified from being elected as mayor or councillor:

  • A judge of any court
  • A member of the Provincial Legislature, the Federal House of Commons or Senate who has not resigned from their office by the close of nominations. Proof of resignation must be provided by the close of nominations
  • A candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement or exceeded the prescribed spending limit in the last municipal election or by-election

School board trustee candidate

To run for any of the four school boards you must be:

  • A Canadian citizen
  • At least 18 years of age
  • A resident in the area of jurisdiction of the board
  • Not legally prohibited from voting
  • Not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office

Who cannot be a school board trustee candidate

The following people are disqualified from being elected as a school board trustee, or from holding office on any school board:

  • A clerk, treasurer, deputy-clerk or deputy-treasurer of any municipality within the area of jurisdiction of the school board except those on an unpaid leave of absence
  • A member of the Provincial Legislature, the Federal House of Commons or Senate who has not resigned from their office by the close of nominations. Proof of resignation must be provided by the close of nominations
  • A candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement or exceeded the prescribed spending limit in the last municipal election or by-election

This session will cover the roles and responsibilities of municipal and regional council members, including time commitments and legal and financial obligations.
