Information for Ward 1 by-election candidates
The nomination period to run for Town Councillor, Ward 1 in the Town of Milton opens on June 24, 2025, and closes at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025.

The nomination period opened on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, and will close at 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025. Nominations may be filed at Town Hall during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.).
All in-person candidate services are provided at Town of Milton – Town Hall at 150 Mary St., Milton. The Town of Milton offers in-person services for candidates at Town Hall on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays by appointment. Candidates need to book an appointment. To book an appointment on a Tuesday or Thursday, please contact us at least two business days in advance by phone at 905-875-5390 or by completing this online form. Election staff are available Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (excluding holidays), online or by phone at 905-875-5390 to answer questions and provide information about the by-election. To file a nomination for Town Councillor, Ward 1, you must provide the following in person at Town Hall:
Original signatures are required on all forms. If an agent files a nomination on your behalf, they must provide all required documents and their own identification. Withdrawing a nomination If you no longer wish to be a candidate, you must file a Notice of Withdrawal in person at Milton Town Hall, 150 Mary St., Milton, by 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025. Candidates cannot withdraw after the nomination period has closed. Candidates who have withdrawn their nomination are still required to file a financial statement. Campaign finances |
Campaign bank account You must open a bank account exclusively for your campaign if you accept any monetary contributions (including from yourself or your spouse) or if you incur any expenses. You do not need to open a campaign bank account if:
If you receive only contributions of goods or services (and no money), you are also not required to open a campaign bank account. You cannot use your personal bank account for campaign finances. All contributions — including those you make to yourself — must be deposited into your campaign bank account. All expenses must be paid from this account. The nomination fee is considered a personal expense, not a campaign expense. You do not need to have a campaign bank account to pay the nomination fee. Contributions Campaign contributions include any money, goods or services given to you for use in your campaign — including contributions you make to yourself. You may only accept contributions from individuals who normally reside in Ontario. Corporations and trade unions are not allowed to contribute to candidates. You may only accept contributions during your campaign period, which begins on the day you file your Nomination Form and ends on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2025. Campaign period Your campaign begins on the date you file your Nomination Form and ends on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2026. If you withdraw your nomination, your campaign ends on the date you file your Withdrawal of Nomination. The deadline to file a Notice of Withdrawal is by 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025. Extending your campaign If your campaign has a deficit, you may extend the campaign period to raise additional funds. Auditor’s report If you raised or spent more than $10,000 on your campaign, you must have your financial statement audited by a licensed auditor under the Public Accounting Act, 2024. The auditor’s report must be included with your financial statement when filing. Campaign surplus If your campaign ends with a surplus, you may refund the value of contributions that you and your spouse made. You are not permitted to refund eligible contributions made by anyone other than you or your spouse. If a surplus still remains, it must be paid to the Town Clerk when you file your financial statement. You, or your agent, must file your financial statement in-person at our Town Hall. Compliance audit If an eligible elector believes that a candidate has broken election finance rules, they may apply for a compliance audit of the candidate’s campaign finances. The application must include the reasons why the applicant believes the rules were contravened. A Compliance Audit Committee will review the application and decide whether to grant or reject it. Candidates may appeal the committee’s decision to the Superior Court of Justice within 15 days of the decision. Nomination papers, endorsements of nomination, and other public documents filed with the Town Clerk can only be viewed at Town of Milton Town Hall, 150 Mary St., during regular business hours (Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., excluding holidays). Filed financial statements are public documents and will be posted on the Town’s website in their entirety, including the names and addresses of all those who contributed more than $100. |
Privacy and personal information |
It is the responsibility of the candidate to protect any personal information collected for the purpose of filing election forms (e.g. Financial Statement, Endorsement of Nomination Form, and/or Contribution Rebate Application), until the forms are filed with the Town Clerk. Once filed, documents and materials submitted to the Town Clerk are subject to access and privacy provisions under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 and other applicable legislation. |
