At its meeting on Monday, May 26, Milton Council declared the Ward 1 Councillor seat vacant. This follows the election of Kristina Tesser Derksen as the Member of Parliament for Milton East–Halton Hills South.

Council has directed staff to begin the process of holding a by-election to fill the vacancy. This decision allows eligible voters in Ward 1 to elect a new representative for the remainder of the current term.

By-election details

The by-election will be held under the Municipal Act, 1996. The Town Clerk will set key dates, including:

  • Nomination Day — Must be set between 30 and 60 days after Council’s decision
  • Voting Day — Will take place 45 days after Nomination Day

The estimated cost of the by-election is $185,000 to $200,000, which includes materials, staffing, and service provider fees.

Once dates are confirmed, they will be posted on the Ward 1 Vacancy page along with more information about the nomination process, how to become a candidate, and how to vote.
