Effective Jan.1, 2026, changes to the Ontario Fire Code will improve early detection of carbon monoxide in homes.

Milton Fire & Rescue Services is reminding residents that updated carbon monoxide (CO) alarm requirements will take effect on Jan. 1, 2026, to enhance home safety and protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carbon monoxide is a colourlessodourless gas that can be deadly. Working CO alarms, when properly installed and tested regularly, can provide early warning and help save lives.

The new requirements apply to a variety of homesincluding detached or semi-detached houses, townhouses, and cottages that contain any of the following:

  • A fireplace

  • An attached garage

  • Heated air supplied by a fuel-burning appliance located outside the home, including:

    • Outdoor wood furnaces or boilers

    • Pellet stoves in detached buildings

    • Propane or natural gas furnaces in outbuildings

    • External boiler systems connected to home heating

Where CO alarms must be installed

Under the Ontario Fire Code, CO alarms are required:

  • Near every sleeping area, and

  • On every storey of the home, including levels without bedrooms

Requirements for landlords and building owners

Additional requirements apply to owners, landlords, and operators of:

  • Multi-unit residential buildings (e.g. apartment buildings)
