The nomination period for the office of Ward 1 councillor is now open, following Council's adoption of By-law 068-2025 at Monday night’s Council meeting, which officially declared the by-election.

Last month, Council declared the Ward 1 seat vacant after Kristina Tesser Derksen was elected as the Member of Parliament for Milton East–Halton Hills South.

Nominations will be accepted until Friday, Aug. 22, 2025, at 2 p.m. Individuals interested in running must meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 and submit their nomination forms to the Office of the Town Clerk before the deadline. Candidates need to book an appointment with Town staff to file their nomination.

“Town staff are working toward supporting Council’s decision of holding a by-election,” said Meaghen Reid, Director, Legislative & Legal Services/Town Clerk. “We will hold the by-election within the legislated timelines and requirements set out in the Municipal Elections Act.”

Under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, campaign expenses cannot be incurred, and contributions cannot be accepted until nomination forms have been officially filed with the Town Clerk, and the candidate has received confirmation.
