The Town of Milton is prepared to respond to winter weather conditions and keep roads and sidewalks safe. Crews will maintain more than 2,400 kilometres of Regional and Town roads, and over 250 kilometres of sidewalks and walkways.

A significant weather event may be declared when snowfall of 20 centimetres or more is expected. During these events, response times may be longer than usual.

Road clearing

When snow arrives, plows are deployed by prioritystarting with emergency corridors and high-traffic roads.

Roads are cleared in the following order:

  • Priority 1: Major roads and transit routes

  • Main roads, those with the greatest volumes of traffic, are treated with salt or sand and plowed to achieve bare pavement. These roads are cleared first.

  • Priority 2: Rural collector roads and industrial areas

  • Rural collector roads, or secondary roads that lead to main roads, are treated with salt or sand and plowed to achieve bare pavement. These roads are treated after Priority 1.

  • Priority 3: Urban and rural residential roads

  • Residential and rural road plowing starts after major arterial and collector roads are cleared of snow and ice.

Windrows

To keep roads clear, snowplows push snow to the right side of the street. This creates windrows at the end of driveways.

The Town clears windrows only for homes enrolled in the Windrow Removal Program. All other residents are responsible for clearing windrows on their property.

If you are able, please lend a hand to older adults or neighbours with mobility challenges by helping remove snow and ice.

Winter parking

Vehicles parked on the street can block snow-clearing operations and pose safety risks. Avoid on-street parking when snow-clearing is underway.

To support residents who rely on street parking, the Town is maintaining several designated lots in local parksWhen parking exceptions are suspended, residents may use these lots for up to 48 hoursParking exceptions are suspended if there is a significant weather event or a winter storm.

How you can help

Residents play an important role in keeping Milton safe during winter. You can help by:

  • Moving your vehicle off the street so plows can clear roads efficiently

  • Clearing snow off the sidewalks attached to your property within 24 hours of the end of a snow or ice storm

  • Clearing snow from fire hydrants and storm drains near your property to prevent flooding and maintain emergency access for first responders

  • Giving snowplows plenty of space to operate safely on the roads

  • Allowing extra travel time and being patient as crews clear routes across the community

Let’s all do our part  be a good neighbour and be kind to the snow-clearing crews working hard to keep our roads and sidewalks safe.
